The .bmp is generated to suit the video mode you are currently using.

No need to ever know about "-colors 256" option, Arachne does it for
you.  If you happen to be running in 256 colors the .jpg will be made
into a .bmp that only uses the number of colors that you need. (sort of)

I just tried it in 16 color mode and the file was the same size. 
I think it should have been 1/2 that size. :(
