SAC was actually deactivated in June 1992, which was not even
a decade ago. (I did some reading yesterday thanks to google)
It part of a massive re-orgainization of the Air Force prompted
by the ending of the Cold War and by the need to achieve a more
integrated approach to air power that had been demonstrated by the
Gulf War.

America's remaining nuclear arsenal was transfered to a new combined
strategic command that included the Navy's Polaris subs.
