Stephane,

If I am not mistaken, the pppdrc.cfg file is created by Arachne, and should
not be modified manually. I think that if you rename the file to something
like, pppdrc.saf and run Arachne, it will send you immediately to Setup.

I started using Arachne on a machine similar to yours, a 486DX33, using
version 1.41 and used version 1.48 on it until very recently when I put 1.68
on it. (I upgraded the 486DX33 to a 586/133 using Evergreen's CPU upgrade
several years ago.) I found a tremendous speed increase by putting my Temp,
Cache, and cache.idx files on a ram disk with HD thrashing going from a lot
to zero. I found a much greater speed increase by installing (as COM2) a
serial card which uses a 16550 UART. Anything less than a 16550 UART will
only allow 9600 bps connection speed. (Motherboard COM2 was disabled.) My
modem is an external 28.8 Practical Peripherals modem.

I have not yet put 1.70R3 on the 586/133, but it runs very fast on a P5/75
machine.

I don't think that you can access the Internet using Arachne thru AOL,
however, you can access the Internet using Arachne using [Classic]
Compuserve. On November 26th both of Compuserve's nameservers went down and
it was about 4 days before we found new nameserver DNSes that would work.
Naturally, Compuserve did not tell users or their support personnel what the
workaround was --- we had to find out from other users.

Glad that you got connected!

Il ne pas de quois! (If I remember my high school French from 50 years ago.)

in the ppdrc.cfg file and/or the arachne.cfg - probably both ! ( must say
