When you write "qirks" I understand your winmodem is one of the ( few:=(
which come with specific drivers for DOS , and these are installed to be
run in the special MS-DOS set up when you "restart to MS-DOS"...

Explanation : there is , of course , nothing specifically "windowy" in a Win
Modem, except for the name and the fact that the manufacturer/vendor did not
care to write appropriate software drivers for DOS .

Now , Samuel , could you please look at your config.sys/autoexec.bat files
( not only the regular ones , but the special config files you can see in
the
properties of the MS-DOS mode restart box under Win 9x ) and there
you should see the DOS driver(s) for your modem listed .

If you care to check please report back as I am interested in getting DOS
drivers for a Connexant ( Rockwell ) winmodem - as there are in fact only
a handful of modem CHIP models in our Win PCs , chances are yours would
work for others ...
