I recently downloaded DJGPP from Simtel, guided by the ZIP picker at
http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/ I used a DOS-based scripted FTP with FTP07. It
would have been a nightmare to go one-by-one through WWW interface. I notice
http://www.programmersheaven.com also has an awkward, inefficient way of guiding
users to downloads. I was downloading NASM for DOS. One link led to a
forbidden file but left me with the URL, so I found my way to the correct
location. Never was it so nice to get out of heaven.

Now with Bluegrass Net having gone to a new domain in terms of IP address range,
accessing hosts by name has become difficult. 16-bit DOS applications are
delayed 30 seconds, while DPMI applications such as Lynx386 don't find the host
at all. If I use IP address, the programs work OK. When I click on a link in
Arachne, I see the copyright, and no more clickable links, but after 30 seconds,
Arachne activates the link. This happens on most every link even within the
same Web site, while DOSLYNX, the old-style version with pulldown menus,
remembers the IP address and does not delay on second and subsequent accesses on
the same Web site. Under these circumstances, the best way to access an FTP
site is with an FTP program like FTP07 rather than a Web browser. I hope the
Simtel webmaster will see my extenuating circumstances and not send a lynch mob
after me if anybody rats on me or if by chance they see this message :(

So now I think I solved the mystery of why links no longer worked in Arachne,
why I just got Michael Polak's copyright notice and no more clickable links, I
should just wait 30 seconds. But has anybody else experienced such a bug with
DOS Internet software, where finding a host by name is subject to such a
consistent delay (non-DPMI) or does not work at all (DPMI)?
