you can have xms and use it.
You can't have UMBs without emm386/qemm386 and a 386.
(because the 286 did not contain a MMU memory management unit)

it's (nearly) impossible to use UMBs on 286.
(there was a chipset for 286 which had its own MMU, so you could use UMBs,
but it was exotic and rarly used)
