Finding a Linux program

     Is there any reasonable way to locate an individual
Linux program that is missing on ones's system?  The par-
ticular program in question is "cmp" which I managed to
create with the help of the "busybox" source code, but any
of the million or so small programs for which Linux is well
known would be a similar problem.
