All dos apps are run separately, with different autoexec.bat files,
variables can be individually tuned. Using the HPFS file system results
in a noticeable improvement in Arachne over FAT.

using Odin, there even was a Mac emulator. Multitasking is it's forte,
running Arachne online while minimized. I find for many Dos programs
that a graphical interface is worse rather than better. That from
upgrading from dos to windows versions. Even Linux I am sure has a dos
  box to run apps in.

Linux has a dosemu, which is not really an emulator, since the user must have
an actual DOS. I think they suggest FreeDOS (http://www.freedos.org/).

I always found Arachne much slower in OS/2 Warp 4 VDM than in straight DOS,
though I never put Arachne on an HPFS partition since I wanted to reserve the
possibility of running Arachne in straight DOS. Modem access in OS/2 Warp 4
VDM was about 40% to 50% the speed of modem access in straight DOS, using 56K
modem.

OS/2 does not actually run Unix programs, though emx helps port such programs to
OS/2. There is an XFree86 OS/2 port. I downloaded Win32s from Hobbes, which
enabled running some Win95 programs in OS/2, including Freecell, and 50WAYS.EXE
found on new Iomega Zip 250 disks. I know they were developing Odin but haven't
followed it since about 10 months ago.
