After 3 attempts to download the newest version of Arachne from
my ISP's mail server, I was able to get a 158 kb "file" {not complete}
of the newest Arachne. I did as the instructions said and ran it in
a directory ARACHTMP\ and it unzipped to a file archive.exe, and made
a subdirectory c:\archtmp\backup. It also made a file arachtmp.bat in
the main directory that was meant to run archive.exe. It didn't work
even after several attempts with 4 different memory configurations.
Here is the resultant files from the first 3 attempts. They were after
I de-installed CUTEMOUSE and SMARTDRIVE, and uncommented a few other
things which are necessary to make present Arachne versions run. The
problem may partly be due to my slow 14.4k modem. I also checked up
on using 'HTTP-referrer=yes' string in arachne.cfg from A. 166. So now
I am essentially at a loss what to do. My computer has 15MBytes "raw"
memory and a total of 28MBytes. Somewhere in between is my "actual"
SXMS memory. Is this the problem? I am running MS-DOS 6.20 {not IBM's
version}, with no other drivers, no Doublespace or similiar compression
driver. What is up? If this is what it does with a partial 358KB, what
would it do with the complete new install file? It says, 'insufficient
memory, type c:\arachtmpcontinue.bat to continue install', but there is
no CONTINUE.BAT. Help, Clarence, anyone. Perhaps I was wrong to even
attempt to run Arachne ver. 170 rel 3 on this old hardware.....
