Hi there,

some of you might remember my recent question in the chat concerning
flickering screens with Arachne and almost new graphic cards. OK, the
simple answer seems to be to lower the screen solution via Arachne's
graphic setup, so that the refresh rate will be raised automatically -
or should I say "hopefully"...

Then I remembered this UNIVESA driver and that I had never used it. I
read the doc file that came with version 3.2 from 1993, which someone
had posted long ago on this list as an attachment. That version
incorporates VESA v1.2 which would be probably useful for my old graphic
card SPEA V7-VEGA Plus PCI (1 MB VRAM) from 1994, because it only
supports VESA v1.02 in its BIOS. But, as I already said in the chat,
this flicker problem isn't mine, but has been reported from two
different people with newer SVGAs instead.

So I looked on www.scitechsoft.com what would be the last Display Doctor
for those people and found a v6.53 for DOS (about 1 MB) on the ftp
server. It seems to be a package with several tools and absolutely no
doc files except a relatively small readme.txt. The Windows package
(about 2 MB) probably has those docs, as this is mentioned in the text
file. It is *not* the newest and maybe the last freeware/shareware
version, because I did not encounter any registration screens, but I'm
not sure about that.

So my question is: has anyone tested this version of Scitech Display
Doctor (SDD) and can tell me if it would make sense to use it together
with Arachne and new graphic cards in order to get around those
flickering screens? Because it's mentioned in the readme.txt that it
would be possible to alter the refresh rate independently from screen
resolution and/or color configuration. If someone's interested, I could
also post this text file (13 KB) here...

ZZee ya, Hans-Jrgen
