Snort is a free Intrusion Detection System.
It per se offers _no_ protection at all, but logs intrusion attempts.

It is no firewall which would block certain ports/IPs.

(there is a mini perl script called guardian which can block IPs which have
tried to intrude your computer. This only works if you can controll the
firewall with the command-line [eg Linux, FreeBSD ... forget windows])

I would see no use for it on Win98.

It is meant for servers running either some sort of Linux or WinNT.
Sysadmins can continuesly watch the logs, and take immediate reaction.

What do you protect your win98 against ??
Win98 has no open ports (if samba has been disabled)
if somebody wants to connect to you, he will get a ICMP Port unreachable.

But if you still want a personal firewall have a look at zonealarm,
tinyfirewall [for both exist free versions] or @guard [now part of norton
internet security costs $)
