In the case mentioned above I was speaking of using the remote site's
Telnet client to login from there to another yet another remote site.

In trying to use the Arachne Telnet client on my local PC to attempt
to login to "sdf.lonestar.org" I experienced the same problems as you;
however, the Telnet client provided with BasicLinux worked fine for
accessing the site.
