Hello Folks: During the time when the list was down Glenn McCorkle and I experimented with a freeware Enigma simulator, ENIGFILE.EXE, 40,520 bytes. It is a very simple DOS program. We found that it worked perfectly for encoding ascii files to send to each other in emails and then for decoding them by using the same wheel settings as the settings used for encoding. The users of this encryption program may use any combination they want for the wheel settings. You have 17576 possible choices of settings. (26 X 26 X 26)=17576. The average snoop would not be able to crack a message sent encoded with this program unless he wanted to go to the trouble of making possibly many thousands of guesses for the wheel settings. NSA could crack it on their Cray computers in just a few seconds.
I would highly recommend this Enigma simulator as being a very good and easy to use encryption program for situations where only a moderate level of security is needed. I sent the program to Glenn. He might make it available for download on his web site if there is enough interest in it. To show how easy it is to use this program, I am sending a screen shot of the program's output when decoding an ascii text file of 20 lines: ------------ begin screen shot ------- C:\SECRET>enigfile E N I G M A - F I L E V E R S I O N By P.C.Culmer Enter 3 letter wheel setting:wiz Source file:mysecret.enc Target file:mysecret.dec Processing line 20 C:\SECRET> -------------- end screen shot -------- To encode, just reverse the the source file and the target file. Always use the same wheel settings for decoding as were used for encoding. Very simple. Messages encoded in this way may be sent in emails either as inserted ascii text or as a text attachment. Numerals will not be encoded. You will have to spell the numerals out, as in "right twenty six, left seventeen, right forty two", as a hypothetical example of how to prepare a message for encoding which will give the combination for a hypothetical padlock.
