Yes, Antiword is better than View.exe, and it was the only program
that helped me out that time, when some e-mail contained a MS-Word
document with an embedded table. Nevertheless I could imagine that
CatDoc would be an even better alternative as default plugin:

* last version even converts Excel files

* it seems to have a better way of detecting the various MS Word file
formats incl. code page

CatDoc does the same as Antiword, binaries are available for DOS and
Linux. The author says that the source code could be easily
compiled within DOS. (I did not succeed, but that does not mean
anything)
