I don't think the subject matters.  The body of the message 
should consist of only one thing:

subscribe arachne

  I don't believe there's a linux list at arachne.cz, though 
we often discuss linux on the arachne list since there is a 
linux version of arachne... pretty dated at this point.

  For the widest linux audiences, I think newsgroups are 
probably best.  My news feed carries 710 groups with the 
word "linux" in their names.  For general purpose info, 
comp.os.linux is pretty good.

  As a rule, linux is case-sensitive.  The name of the list 
is "arachne" so it could be that it didn't recognize 
"Arachne."
