One of the best online resources in "book" form is rute.
It ranges from beginner to advanced, so you can start with
it, and it's still useful once you have a good grasp of what
you're doing. The latest version (v1.0) is available from
the rute homepage,
http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/index.html.gz , however,
notice that the contents are gzipped, and require a browser
which can unzip it on the fly. Arachne is not such a
browser.
There are older versions floating around which are every
bit as useful, maybe even moreso for the older Linux
distributions required for older hardware,

If you can do pdf, I think all the rute versions have been
released in that format, so you can just download the whole
book at once (about 5MB) if you have the space, bandwidth,
and pdf reader.

The last linux version of Arachne, and the one I launch
from PINE, was 1.66. IIRC, it was considered an alpha
version when released, and in the meantime, Michael has
stopped developing it. I believe he's still working on
flowerpot which will be a cross-platform SDK? to allow
Arachne2 to run on any platform. We haven't heard news on
that for some time.

Any distro can use X, or do without it. Some make it
easier or harder to install without, so I'm sure you won't
want to be installing Mandrake, since that makes a lot of
assumptions that are contraindicated for those who wish to
use legacy hardware.

Also, you can run apps in X without any window manager or
Desktop Environment. You get the benefits of the GUI app
without all the bloat of the stuff you don't want or need.
