Hi Carl, Welcome Aboard!
I gathered from your message that you might be wanting
to wet your feet so to speak with Linux , or maybe get
something going on DOS Internet. I don't know too
much about Linux, but there are 2 "Steve"s on the list
that are very proficient! Now, for DOS Internet, that
I can do a bit better with. For starters, a visit to
my DOS Internet site might be helpful. I have tips as
well as software recommendations and download links.
The url is:
http://members.surfbest.net/wizard57m@;surfbest.net/dos.htm
or at GeoCities:
http://www.geocities.com/wizard57m/dosinet.html

There should be something on those pages to get you going
with DOS Internet, be it Arachne or otherwise. In the
meantime, I'll let one of our "Steve"s take over for
Linux! BasicLinux is a good starting point, based
on Slackware 3...runs on legacy hardware also, smaller...
not as much "eye candy" but useful and quick.

Good Luck!
Glenn
