load it manually, and tell us what it writes on the screen.
is it loaded afterwards ?? (does it show up in mem /c/p/a ?)
Is it a PS/2, a serial or an USB mouse.
PS/2 is good, serial is OK, and USB is crap :(
so if you have an USB mouse than you are IMHO stuck.
(but USB comes only with the latest pentium 1s, or later computers)
