Ok now, you trubblemakers! <G>
I really oughta yell at you louder, but I'm gonna keep things civilized
here, pilgrim ...
1. Stop the total quoting of previous messages!! This last time round
I had to scroll through 5 screens to see what some people had to say,
and someone with less patience would have likely given up.
2. Everyone -- I won't name names but you should know who you are --
a. Start putting your message at the TOP, before the quote, so
that it can be easily read even if you do have a 7 screen quote.
b. If you are going to say something more, mid-way through the
quoted message, let us know ... stick in something like
(cont) or (more below) or ??? Be inventive, but be informative.
On to things specifically Arachnish ...
Instead of fighting for this or that and including new MIME.CFG files
with each individual's favorite personal tweak (which could be a total
disaster), serious consideration should be given to requiring tweaks to
function under the APM rules originally designed for Arachne. If that
is done, the APM software is designed to make changes/additions to
MIME.CFG as required.
Every "release version" should be carefully checked against prior
versions to make certain that the various ACF files are at proper
starting DEFAULT and that MIME.CFG is at proper starting DEFAULT.
Now that default stuff may sound petty, but when I was searching
last night for a possible cause of the "Someone's Computer Bug"
I realized that I had all sorts of duplicate and/or contradictory
lines in my MIME.CFG file. Why? Cuz I wanted to use my prior
configurations but then ended up having to go for an APM at a
later date to see if "maybe it will work for me with this version."
If I were totally dependent upon Arachne, I'd be scared nearly witless
about finding a "clean" default MIME.CFG and then being able to properly
tweak it to take advantage of what I *do* want to have added in ...
Why? Because some of the tweaks are NOT APM-able, and some of the
tweaks are mutually antagonistic.
For those who can't make things APMable, or who believe that their
tweaks can't really be done correctly using APM protocol, then make your
own install and UNinstall/restore programs ... which should be do-able
via nothing more than a well designed BATch file.
Things like the MIME.CFG call for a program thats isn't part of default
installation shouldn't be happening .... right???
I have archived a bunch of former versions, and maybe in there I can
find a default MIME.CFG which is totally "tweak free" ... if downloads
of default stuff from Arachne site aren't working.
The foregoing is, as always, IMNSHO
