Hi List!
I've been following this topic a bit, and something came
to mind. I run Arachne on my Win95 machine, booted into
plain DOS 7.0, and don't remember having any problems
clicking on the Your Computer icon...anyway, that's not
what I'm writing about at the moment. What I am pointing
out is that a computer with Win9X installed assumes that
the computer will have "LFNs", long file names. When
the computer is in DOS mode, the hard drives on the
machine are "locked" to ALL applications that may in
some fashion cause damage to the VFAT (virtual file
allocation table) where Win9X gets the long file name
from! I run a comms program, Delrina Freecomm Lite,
and if I boot into DOS, when I start Freecomm (DFC),
I get a message that it cannot be saved to disk, and
that less memory will be available for other applications.
However, if I run DFC in a "DOS box" under Win95, I do
not get this error...Win9X allows DFC to write part of
itself to disk. In DOS 7 this is blocked to protect
LFNs. So, what I think could be happening is a Win9X
machines VFAT is protecting the disks to prevent the
corruption of LFNs associated with Win9X. FWIW, I
have also tried issuing the "lock" and "unlock" command
at DOS prompt to allow programs to access the hard drive,
but still DFC is not allowed to keep part of itself in
a "temporary" file on the HD. Arachne may be blocked
from full HD access by this same mechanism. Note that
this is just a guess...I'll do some checking and see
if I can lockup my Win9X Arachne installation with the
Your Computer icon...and if so, if by issuing the
"lock" command alleviates the problem!
