Sam, Have you looked at the "MicroTrac" trackball from Microspeed? I got one when I got a laptop for the same reason you want a mini-mouse; to carry with me. You can hold it in the palm of your hand and manipulate the trackball with your thumb, or you can put some Velcro on it and stick it to a convenient flat spot on the laptop, or you can put it on the desk next to the laptop. It is Micro$oft and Mouse Systems compatible and can use their drivers without any modifications.
I must warn you, however, the trackball is small and loose (at least in the one that I have) and fast. The pointer can move great distances if you are not careful how you take your hand off the trackball. I prefer a trackball as I always know where it is, never need a space for it greater than its physical size, and never have to pick it up and move it because the pointer did not go where I wanted it before I ran out of room.
