Back in the days before Windows became popular, and when there were
still a lot of people writing programs in BASIC, there were a lot of
elecronics hobbyist books and magazine articles describing how to do
exactly what you have in mind.  There were instructions, schematics,
parts lists for electronic components, and sample basic programs.
Most of the books and articles I looked at were for hobbyists having
what I would call an "intermediate" level of electronics skills and
computer knowledge, meaning not for novices, but not requiring
highly advanced technical skills.
