Hiya List!

Going to try this again, hehe. The first attempt at a post
was while using Lynx 386 DOS, and the web interface at SoftHome
via Squirrelmail. I've noticed similar extra characters when
filling out other web forms using Lynx 386. Kind of makes a
message hard to read.

Anyway, I have been using SoftHome, www.SoftHome.net, for an
email service for about a year now, ever since Yahoo announced
they were going to drop the free POP3/SMTP service and go to
a fee for usage basis. Softhome works usually quite well in
both Arachne and Lynx 386, as well as stand alone email clients,
such as NetMail DOS, POPMail PC and FoxMail 1.6 for Win3X. It
does require some form of authentication prior to sending SMTP
mail, but Arachne can manage it by doing a POP before SMTP,
fetch before send.

Another more recent free email service I can recommend is
XMS Mail. In addition to the web interface, it also can use
standalone clients using the POP before SMTP to authenticate
the user. Another feature I like about XMS is the "forum",
sort of a chat or message board. XMS also has a calendar
which is web based and Arachne friendly. Keep your appointments,
special occasions, etc. in a free PIM!

Note: XMS is currently upgrading server and software, so the
service may be unavailable for a couple of days. Sign up for
a free email account at http://www.xms.ms.

Finally, I would like to mention that it is OUR responsibility
to support those services that continue to support US, the users
of the Internet, especially those of us who prefer "alternative"
operating systems and web software as opposed to whatever the
latest version of Win9X is and IE 999 or whatever! If we, as
users, do not support these excellent free services, then we have
NOBODY but ourselves to blame when they no longer are available.

Have a good one! C U L8R!
