Huhh hmmmm.....

FYI,
We have had the option for several years now of
changing where we go after either POP3 or SMTP

In arachne.cfg you will find these 2 lines
which are (by default), commented-out.

;AfterPOP3 smtp:
;AfterSMTP file:mail.htm

Remove the ';' to 'enable' either one (or both), of them.

If after POP3, you would like to go to mail.htm instead of the 'default'
of being sent to the inbox.
(or the commented-out option of then sending any unsent messages via smtp)

You can use this line.
AfterPOP3 file:mail.htm

--- my settings ---
AfterPOP3 arachne:exit
;AfterSMTP file:mail.htm

As to
"What earthly use is it to be presented with the empty Outbox...."

1) when we send just the one outgoing message we are
currently viewing/editing. We are now on the outbox with the
remaining uinsent messages shown. (not an empty outbox)

2) when something goes wrong with the 'Send unsent mail' function.
   a) in my case.... if I forget the spam filter settings
at CisNet and mistakenly have one of the 'forbidden'
characters in the subject line of one or more of my
outgoing mails. '$' is forbidden in subject line at CisNet :(

    b) when sending to an SMTP sever which requires POP3/SMTP
within 5 minutes and I missed the 5min deadline

3) just out of 'curiosity' that everything went
right and that all messages *did* get sent ;-)

__________

As to POP3 and SMTP going into history.lst

I will look into this and get back to you.
