I've just turned it on and I find the arrow keys will now scroll the
message through the window.

But only the ones that are on-screen, with or without smooth scrolling
enabled. You have to use the up-arrow to scroll the message back to the
top of the message window before you can use the Tab key to get to the
buttons up there.
I found one way of 100% keyboard control is to Tab or Shift-arrow until
the pointer is on the Trash button or any other button, such as the
Archive or the ">>" one, then when you hit enter, that message
disappears and the next one comes up.
You use down-arrow to scroll through the message and read it, then
up-arrow to take you back to the top. The cursor is still on the same
button and you only need to hit enter to go to the next message.
