Actually, it's ed -- but this very topic was brought up late last year
in the PSARC review of a case to modify crontab, with many people
agreeing with you that this really needs to be changed, and if I recall
correctly, the final decision was that this should be changed for an
upcoming "minor" release (such as Nevada) but not changed in existing
releases via a patch or update release.   (Sun's architecture committees
don't set which release a change can go into, just which type of release
- is it suitable for a Major (X.Y -> X+1.0) or Minor (X.Y -> X.Y+1)
release or something that could even go into a patch or update release.)
