I already have some of this kind of thing working.  Plus, it'd be very
handy if the RISC OS side could store configuration information in the
back end.  (Perhaps even have a GUI configuration tool in extnrom, for
example.)

So far, your implementation seems much more complex and difficult to
maintain than my original suggestion.
