I see no reason to keep hal in our distribution anymore, so I already went ahead a bit and built gnome-vfs without hal support. Other packages will follow soon and when all is done hal can be removed.

Move on and remove it. As you said, it isn't necessary anymore and the most programs has it as optional dependency.
