You could use a lot more than 10%, in case someone really wants to
install things into the live system.

To minimize the size of the file systems, you shouldn't install to them
directly. Instead, you should install into a temporary directory, then
cp -a the contents to the image (in case you don't do this already).
This will probably save a few bytes.
