I did check for consistency of the running kernel, /usr/src, and
/lib/modules and everything looks OK.
It's now running again and seems persistent over reboot.
My only clue is the location of the call to kdm.
I had placed it in /etc/inittab as some suggested last week. I've now
removed it (calling xdm instead) and added a call to the 'module' kdm
in rc.conf. Perhaps someone can explain why the location of the
command whould cause/cure the behavior I've observed.

Maybe you should run �depmod�? Have you checked everything is nice
with �uname� and �ls /lib/modules�? I always had a problem with Arch
because it doesn't run �lilo� for me, so I started up with an old
kernel whilst I thought I had a new one. And than I couldn't load any
modules anymore...

so it would seem that the system doesn't know where the drivers are.
I did upgrade the kernel to 2.6.11 last week. Is it possible that
something was not updated which would point the kernel to
/lib/modules/2.6.11,,?

Before posting this I got back into Arch to see if I could find some
more info. While I was running in console mode I decied to run
'vmware-config.pl' to update vmware for the new kernel. That worked
fine. I then, on a whim, ran /etc/rc.sysint and all the modules
loaded!
So I'm a happy camper again but, I must admit, totally perplexed as to
why the vmware-config.pl step fised the problem.
Can anyone explain?
