Uuuhh yes. Why would compaq use a different bootstrap mechanism? I have two compaq pc's myself. Those "recovery" partitions you speak of, are what they say they are: recovery partitions. It containts data to restore your computer to the state it was when you bought it. These can safely be deleted. And why wouldn't you be able to overwrite the "windows" MBR? I've done it many times before, a MBR just indicates where it can find some stuff to bootstrap.

    that doesn't make any sense... I've never seen a "custom booting
    sequence"... I've dual booted window+arch on around 10-15 machines,
    and never, ever had an issue with grub chainloading ntloader...
