you might need to add options snd-via82xx index=0 dxs_support=4 or something like it at the top of whatever alsa decides you need in modprobe.conf the dxs stuff sorts out horrid distortion and breakthru effects. That came from the list at the alsa site. there are other things you might want to add, another that I found on the alsa website was alias sound-slot-1 snd-emu10k1 I forget what it does but I am not going to remove it either. THe Arch forums have some other pointers on using via sound. The dxs problem was the hardest to find a solution for.
