Yes, sometimes flexibility and simplicity competes. simplicity should win.
I should clarify that it's possible to build most php-(core)-extensions
on top on a minimal php-installation using the phpize command. So
flexibility isn't lost.
The included extensions in the core pkg should be kept minimal. More
extension -> more possible bugs. The default extensions from Gentoo are somewhat
arbitrary. For example they configure cracklib (no other distribution
does it: php-cracklib is considered experimental by its authors)
and get a lot of bugzilla reports because of recent cracklib changes.
So maybe it's better to create php-odbc/PKGBUILD to remove runtime dependencies
from the core package.
