Thanks for the info!

I found that I had to add the '--retain-privileges' option to the hald
startup line in /etc/rc.d/hal for the automount to work again. Running:

# hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes

as root in a console spotted some permissions problems reading a couple
of files and during mounting, so retaining the permissions seems to have
overcome this (at least for me).
