All, Has there been any development regarding when and how the license field is going to be used? We are having increasing trouble with people using it in PKGBUILDs in the AUR. I recently sent this mail to one user which clarifies the situation regarding the AUR:
"I have discussed this with the other TUs. The issue is that the actual use of the license field has not been decided - we believe the guidelines have been written but have not yet been released. You may have incorrectly assumed how this field will be used. Therefore, we request and advise that the field be left blank so that it may be filled with the correct information later. You may, therefore, have to change the information later anyway. The additional issue is that people may see your PKGBUILDs and assume that this field is required and that you have correctly filled it. Further, what if you go away and don't update your PKGBUILDs and they have the wrong license info, that is worse than having the field blank, don't you think? And it leaves a lot of work for the TUs." This mail was very well received and I thank the user for his patience - it would be good to official clarify the situation tho!
