Running multiple python versions is possible but also another source of
error. You don't need python 2.3.5. Use python 2.4 from the ArchLinux
Repository. It's downwards compatible. So you can use PIL from the
community repository, which runs fine here: I use CMFPhoto(Album).

pdftotext is part of the xpdf package. pdftohtml is on Sourceforge. It
should be easy to make an archlinux package. 

You normally don't need all of these binaries. They are used by
PortalTransforms for on-the-fly Content-Type transformations. For Example: 
Display PDF content in your site by converting it to text.
