Actually, it turns out that the artsdsp solution wound up not being needed.  I 
just set KDE's arts to use ESD for its output device and - voila - the flash 
plugin got sound.  Very cool!  It worked when setting the output device to alsa 
or oss too, but the sound from the flash player was choppy, whereas with ESD 
the sound was smooth.

Having a bear of a time re-creating the same solution on my box here at work 
though, unfortunately.  I'm not able to get any app to use ESD successfully - 
xmms, bmp, and kde/arts all seem to fail.  Very annoying!  I'm not sure what 
the problem is, or what's different about this box.  Using alsa or oss in any 
of those apps seems to work fine.
