It didn't seem like it made any difference in things like xmms and bmp.  But in 
the flash player plugin (in Firefox) ESD made a big difference.  The sound was 
from the flash player came out very choppy using alsa or OSS output, but nice 
and smooth with ESD.  When I was googling around trying to solve this problem I 
came upon a post where someone reported a similar experience with ESD and the 
flash player.  (Which is what convinced me to start using ESD in the first 
place.)

I can't speak for any apps other than these though, because these are pretty 
much the only audio apps I use.
