Dear Archers,

just some words on the happenings on the Main Page i18n we are doing at
ArchWiki.

Translations have started. Hope more people will join this translation
work for the other languages.

the actual news:
----------------
the bottom navigation bar (navigatearchlinux) was extended to take
additional links in a second line. this is intended for links that are
only usefull for people reading the main page of one language (but not
the other languages). if you like, we can also make this be the first
line and the general links the second line. if you want it changed, feel
free to express yourself. i'm reading this mailinglist on a regular basis
(when i'm online :-) )

the template is here:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Template:Navigatearchlinux
note that it now contains {{{1}}} in it. this is the first variable that
is passed to it.

just to refresh your knowledge on mediawiki template happenings:

a template is invoked using this strucutre:
{{Template Name|First Variable|Second Variable|...}}

the navigation bar takes additional contents as first variable. example:

global main page has this code in it now:
{{navigatearchlinux|}}

this means the first variable is empty (no text in it) but it exists
(because there is a pipe here)

the french main page i have extended by 2 additional links to illustrate
the usage of this structure - like this:
{{navigatearchlinux|
[http://archlinuxfr.org/ ArchLinux FR Portal]
<nowiki>|</nowiki>
[http://wiki2.archlinuxfr.org/ Wiki de ArchLinux FR]
}}

the first variable here is this 2 links with the separation pipe. note
that we MUST use the <nowiki> to have this pipe interpreted as normal
char and not variable separator from mediawiki.

see yourself:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Main_Page
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Main_Page_(Français)

feel free to extend the {{navigatearchlinux}} on the language main pages
with the links coresponding to the language the page is in.

that's it about this subject.

another thing is the translation of the wiki navigation bar on the top.

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Template:Newpagelinksmain

i have created coresponding templates. to translate, go to

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Template:Newpagelinksmain-de
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Template:Newpagelinksmain-fr
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Template:Newpagelinksmain-pt-BR
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Template:Newpagelinksmain-pt-PT
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Template:Newpagelinksmain-ru
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Template:Newpagelinksmain-zh-CN
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Template:Newpagelinksmain-zh-TW

translate it (only the text between the ''' '''),

and then on the coresponding main page, replace

{{newpagelinksmain}}

by

{{newpagelinksmain-$lang}}
.
voilĂ ! this should be enough to have it translated. when you did so,
please email me to protect this templates.

have fun - multilingual!

greetings,
Damir
