Hmm... it does work for single packages, as I remember now I've used it once. 
The man page got me confused.

Pacman is really great, but from time to time I find some switches 
(combiations) which don't work as I expect. This might be the downside of 
having one program do all the packaging stuff.

I haven't used all pacman's switches, I don't have a globar overview of all 
options, so I can't suggest improvements on this side, without coliding with 
existing stuff.
