Maybe it would be a good idea to include a default all-inclusive initrd image. I'm running a kernel without ext2 built altogether, so "mkinitrd auto" always ends with "mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext2'".
And one minor note: I have the loopback capability also built as a module. Maybe mkinitrd should check this somehow and do a modprobe at the beginning.
