Try doing this:
1.  in your boot manager (e.g., grub) add this to the end of your vmlinuz line:  psmouse.proto=imps (e.g., "kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 psmouse.proto=imps vga=771 ro")
2.  reboot
