Thanks for the suggestion Stavros. Tried with --enable-maintainer-mode.
No luck. 

Somehow po/Makefile.in.in gets created wrong or intltoolize fails of
some other reason. The po/Makefile.in.in does get created during the
autogen process. I can delete the file and rerun autogen.sh with the
same result.
