The question's been asked before[1] without getting an answer.

These are my impressions and opinions. They aren't encumbered by
anything resembling facts or actual knowledge ;-)

 - gawk has more features (i.e. extensions over plain awk), but mawk is
   good enough.
 - mawk is faster than gawk.
