It's done already, by the way. I don't give you credit by name though,
I simply give a few lines about getting Arch to work with Japanese.

I remember that. We were going a bit crazy playing with it as I recall,
now I can't even remember where the PKGBUILD broke.

At any rate, I've found that with fluxbox and mlterm, all I have to do
(and I just tested this a few minutes ago) is set in .xinitrc

export XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM"
export LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8
scim -d

That's all. Then, when I open mlterm if I hit ctrl+space, the little
widget opens. It defaults to English, but if I click on it once, and
select Japanese=>anthy, even if I close it again, the next time I open
it in that X session it will stay in Japanese. (The next time I start
X, however, I will once again have to change it from the English
default).

A quick note to anyone who hasn't tried mlterm. The default font size
is 16. If one sets, as mentioned in my friend's article, the size to
14, and also turns off anti-aliasing, it seems to be better. With the
default size of 16, if one opens an mlterm using utf8 (whether en_US or
ja_JP) the terminal is oversized.

You too, and once again, thanks.
