Well, as he said... If you have a correctly set up framebuffer you can
basically have a graphical web browser / with mouse movenent without the
need to run X.
So for machines that don't have enough power to run X and a window
manager, this is an option.

There is always a niche. I used links -g when I was experimenting with
fbdev and bootsplash and all that phoney stuff. :-P
