A new screenshot, now with a lighter theme is available at [1]. The
vertical lines are not part of the theme.

Moving windows over them doesn't make them disappear. Jumping to console
and then back doesn't make them disappear. Changing the background does
make them disappear.

It seems the artefacts are always in the same colour as my GNOME panel.
Maybe this isn't an X issue after all?
