Are you using special drivers, like madwifi-ng? They now require you to create a virtual device (say eth2) from the wlan0. Check out their docs, it is really easy. If you are using native stuff, sorry for the flack.
wlanconfig eth2 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta
