Sounds more like a terminal problem than a keyboard problem - I mean,
hitting "Alt+2" does something different than hitting "2", so the Alt
key is fine, it's just *HOW* it's interpreted that's the issue.

What terminal are you using?  Also, what does "echo $TERM" give you?
