As I showed im a previous post, the device is there and I have write permission on it (I'm on optical group):
ls -l /dev/dvdDowngrading dvd+rw-tools from 6.0-1 to 5.21.4.10.8-4 worked for me too.
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2006-01-24 18:39 /dev/dvd -> hdc
ls -l /dev/hdc
brw-rw---- 1 root optical 22, 0 2006-01-24 18:39 /dev/hdc
I'm using udev 079-1, from Current , and the permissions seem right for me, so I think we can't blame udev for this.

The problems began after an upgrade two days ago, I suppose I had the newest udev (which I still have on my system) and dvd+rw-tools 6.0.1 (which are now 5.21.X again).
In my oppinon there is something with the dvd+rw-tools package.
